Broomhill Guidelines
MANAGEMENT
1. Fife Diet and Broomhill Gardens Association will jointly lease the site from Fife Council.
2. Initially Fife Diet will run the project with a view to building a support base and establishing Broomhill Gardens Association.
3. We will have regular Management Committee Meetings to make collective planning decisions.
4. In the Community Garden there will be regular Work Days. On these days we will plan the garden, work on the garden, allocate jobs and share out produce.
5. The Community Garden will be able to host visitors and hold events.
SITE RULES
1. All plot holders and community garden members shall abide by the Conditions of Membership.
2. All applications for membership shall be made to a member of the Management Committee.
3. All applications for a plot shall be passed on to the Council who will manage the waiting lists for plots.
4. All plot holders will have a key to the communal shed, there will be 3 elected key holders for the community garden.
5. No sheds, polytunnels or greenhouses can be built on the plots.
6. Plot-holders must assist in maintaining ing the paths bordering their plots.
7. Dogs need to be kept on leads and cleaned up after.
8. No livestock is to be kept on the allotments.
9. The site will be an organic site and the plot holders and members of the community garden will follow these basic organic guidelines:
- No artificial fertilisers.
- Bulky soil improvers should not come from polluted or potentially toxic environments. i.e. Heavily polluted roadsides, intensive farming.
- No genetically modified seeds, or seeds, bulbs, sets and tubers treated with fungicides after harvest.
- Be aware that peat is an unsustainable resource and has climate change implications. This includes peat containers.
- No chemical pesticides. This includes: weedkillers, fungicides, insecticides, and soil treatments.
- Please use chemical wood treatments only if it is a health and safety issue and avoid wood from unsustainable sources.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
1. Stay within your own capability when undertaking hard physical work on site.
2. Take care when using power mowers or strimmers.
3. As this is a residential area there can be no fires on site.
4. Don’t leave any broken glass or rusty metal lying around.
5. Tetanus is an illness caused by bacteria present in soil and manure, which can enter the body through the tiniest abrasion, scratch, thorn, puncture or cut. Wear gloves when needed and avoid sharp objects and materials.
6. Put tools away after use.
7. Rats can carry Weil’s Disease via their urine. Any evidence of rats on site should be reported to the Management Committee.
8. There is a First Aid Kit in the shed.
