Kitchen Garden workshops
Come and join the Seed Truck and Dundee Urban Orchard for free workshops to learn gardening skills and help create a new community garden at the Dudhope Community Centre (Bharatiya Ashram), 5 St Mary Place, Dundee
Over the past two years we have worked with a number of community groups and schools to help them get their gardens ready for growing. Even if they have no soil (a sad starting point for a group of budding gardeners; there is obviously a need for better access to land, but that is another story) then as long as they have lots of enthusiasm, we can create raised beds and planters.
The Dudhope Community Centre will be the seventh group with which we have worked, and we are excited to be working there. The main cultural force at the centre is the Bharatiya Ashram, a cultural hub for minority ethnic groups within the city.
The Centre provides Adult education classes in Life drawing and still life, sewing and cookery classes, and dance classes such as Bellydance, Bollywood and Indian Classical. The Centre promotes Asian arts and culture and offers classes in Sitar, Tabla, Indian vocal performance and Dance.
On health issues the Centre provides Healthy Eating and Living initiatives, including a South Indian Vegetarian lunch club (every Saturday) , a Chinese lunch club (Tuesdays) and, just started, a Scottish lunch club (first Thursday of the month). We also run a small allotment, hold open sessions and talks, and run exercise classes for the community, such as Chi Jung.
We are looking for all sorts of able bodied volunteers to help us transform a bare gravel site into a garden ready for planting – and learn quite a lot of things in the process. On sunny days (for which Dundee is well known) you can tell it will be a lovely space to be in. It is a south facing slope with a stone wall behind it which quickly warms up in the sun – perfect for apple trees and a lean-to polytunnel. The site is right next to the kitchen, and produce grown there will be used in the lunch clubs and for events.
This workshop will be about how to plan the garden (what to plant and when, crop rotation etc) and a practical session on sowing seeds and propagating. You will also get a chance to choose seeds from the beautifully decorated Seed Kist (to be revealed at the Fife Diet AGM on Saturday the 15th of Febraury).
Spaces may be limited on some workshops so please check before you come by contacting:
