Land Share Scheme

Has anybody had problems getting an allotment for growing food ?

I have been on the list for a local Allotment for 2 years

and I’m 80th on the list.

The Landshare Scheme being setup by Channel 4 and

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall might be of interest.

Oooh, and to Allotmonaut… That IS true. And most councils are more than eager to get people off their waiting lists and into a patch of land. Find a derelict plot, ask your council about it (the Green Spaces Dept.) and they’ll probably give it you cheap or for free if you show them you can turn it into something beautiful…

I’d like to point out that this Land Share idea has been around a long time before Channel 4 or River Cottage publicised it. Transition Towns like Totnes have been doing something called Garden Share for years… But, it’s a bandwagon I’m happy for the TV folks to jump on ;-)

I remember seeing on River Cottage that if enough of you (6, I think) band together and ask for land to grow food the council have to oblige.

There is a Local Fruit & Veg shop in Burntisland that sell’s a wide range of local produce, not just carrots, potatoes and cabbage etc, but local real Aberdour / Burntilsland honey, good range of dried foods and oils. I’m sure they would appreciate your custom and I beleive they will deliver to your door if required.

I’m a complete newbie at trying to source my food locally and it has to be said not making terrific progress as yet as it is hard to break old habits.

I live in a small flat but I’m hoping that as my daughter and other half who have a garden which they aren’t making any use of will let me start a veg patch in return for a share of whatever I can produce, which will help me and to some extent them make a step in the right direction.

While it’s not exactly what the Channel 4 people have in mind, at least I will be making a step in the right direction in trying to produce food in a sustainable way.

The idea comes, as Matthew says, from Channel 4 and River Cottage. At the moment the priority for the project is to get people to register their interest in various roles (grower, land-owner, etc.) so we can demonstrate the need and demand, and get people to help us shape how Landshare is implemented in practice. So please do register your interest at http://www.channel4.com/landshare and get involved.
